Garden & Garlic a Special Pre-Festival Offsite Event at Forrest Green Farm!!

Want to know how to grow really great garlic and amazing perennial onions? This is your chance!

Central Virginia Master Gardener and owner/worker of Southern Exposure Seed Exchange Ira Wallace joins forces with Forrest Green Farm owner Krista Rahm for a hands-on event dedicated to learning everything you’ll need to know about adding heirloom garlic and perennial onion varieties to your garden. Participants take home samples and must-try recipes!

Each guest will attend two workshops:

The How-To’s of Garlic and Onion Planting with Ira Wallace
In this course, Wallace will cover soil preparation, weed control and disease prevention, as well as curing and storage requirements. Guests will take home a summary sheet with key tips, as well as a selection of garlic and perennial onions.

Eight Ways to Preserve your Garlic Harvest with Krista Rahm
Did you know that 80% of the garlic sold in the United States is imported from China, and is required to be treated with methyl bromide to kill any lingering insects? Much of the garlic is whitened with bleach and treated with growth inhibitors to delay sprouting. These facts alone are motivators to grow and preserve your own garlic crop. In this workshop, Rahm will cover creative methods to safely preserve garlic. This hands-on presentation is combined with tastings of garlic honey, garlic vinegar, pesto and garlic oil as she covers topics ranging from fermenting to freezing and powdering garlic.

Your event includes a delicious lunch from the award-winning Blue Ridge Pizza Food Truck—on-location, wood-fired pizza right from the oven. Menu also includes fresh salads, desserts and refreshing beverages from the farm.
